Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse, Hales Annex 180 West Lorain Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

Xenia Rubinos will perform live at Oberlin’s Cat in the Cream Coffeehouse, along with funk-joy student band opener Bembé:

Proceeds from this record will go to Familia: Trans & Queer Liberation Movement, an organization that addresses and advocates for Trans and Queer Latinx people and issues.

Music-maker Xenia Rubinos uses her powerful voice to create beats and melodies from scratch. Her sound grows from a wide palette of influences ranging from Caribbean rhythms and beat music to minimalism and indie rock all delivered with a soulful punk aura. Xenia’s ecstatic songs feature layered beats, crunchy keyboards, and driving syncopated rhythms.

“One thing I was curious about was how Cubans are able to carry their joy and their pain as if they were the same thing,” she says. “That’s part of this brown-girl magic I wondered if I could harness. In a live show, I feel the weight of what I’m saying, but it’s fun. I’m dancing and we’re all there together. I wish that’s what it could always be like, that we could have that conversation.” Exerpt from
