Jonathan Fenwick’s Winter Term Violin and Electronics Recital

Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 4:30pm to 5:30pm

Kulas Recital Hall, Conservatory Central Unit
77 West College Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

My winter-term project is to learn contemporary works for solo violin and violin with electronics. Come hear the resulting recital that will feature the following:

• Mario Davidovsky: Synchronisms No. 9 for violin and tape (1988), 9'
A wonderfully virtuosic piece from Davidovsky's series of compositions for live instruments with pre-recorded tape. An important milestone in the violin/electronics repertoire, it was commissioned by and created at MIT and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

• Frances White: The Old Rose Reader for violin, electronic sound, and video (2004), '15
An ethereal composition complete with narration, video, electronics, and a romantic violin part, all combined into a theatrical experience.

• Ursula Mamlok: From My Garden for solo violin (1987), 6'
Mamlok dedicated this piece to her husband. She drew inspiration from the garden at her summer home in San Mateo, California. It has a calm tone overall but grows to an intense middle section. Even the prettiest flowers may have thorns.

Rachel Gibson: Dream Worlds for violin and fixed media (2017), 7'
A brand new piece by Rachel Gibson.
