Winter Term Oberlin Phlox Choir: Olivia Fink, director

Saturday, February 1 at 2:00pm

Fairchild Chapel, Bosworth Hall
50 West Lorain Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

The Phlox Ensembles are a choir and orchestra designed to promote women, trans, and non-binary musicians organized by Oberlin Students for Gender Inclusivity in Music (SGIM). The ensembles aim to provide a space for students of traditionally underrepresented gender identities and those with a demonstrated commitment to gender inclusion to engage with classical music and to celebrate the achievements of musicians and composers of these identities. To that end, the ensembles will be performing a variety of historical and contemporary works by women, trans, and non-binary composers.

The SGIM Phlox Ensembles will be an intensive, full credit project taking place during the last two weeks of winter rerm. Professional conductor Nan Washburn and student conductor Sophia Bass will lead the orchestra and student conductor Olivia Fink will direct the choir. Student composers will also be featured.

In addition to daily rehearsals, participants will be encouraged to attend public talks, listening parties, and other activities related to gender in music. The project will culminate in two public performances, one by each ensemble, during the last weekend of winter trm. These performances will allow the ensembles to share the importance of this music with the student body and wider campus community.
