William I. Hitchcock is professor of history at the University of Virginia, presently on leave as Henry Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. His books include The Bitter Road to Freedom: A New History of the Liberation of Europe (2008).
