[About the School]
Vanderbilt is a small law school with a global outlook and an expansive reach. With only 175 students in each entering J.D. class, our smaller size coupled with our faculty's reputation fosters a culture that is both highly challenging and unusually collegial. Our academic, clinical and externship programs connect theoretical training to real world practice settings across the nation and around the world, and our LL.M. program adds to the mix another fifty students who are foreign-trained attorneys from dozens of nations. Our graduates choose employment in a wide variety of locations from coast to coast and abroad, and more than 8,600 alumni in 49 states, D.C., two U.S. territories and 30 foreign nations are a vital force in the life of the school. We are fortunate to be situated on a world-class university campus in the heart of the major legal, economic and political center of Nashville, a city with a remarkable blend of cosmopolitan sophistication and the feel of a friendly small town. Prospective law students will be interested to know that Vanderbilt offers in-person interviews as part of the application process. VLS alumni conduct interviews in 37 states and 12 foreign locations, which provides great opportunities for applicants to meet individually with lawyers working in locations of interest to the applicant. And interviews allow us to learn more about prospective students than from their applications alone, which helps us to maintain the challenging and collegial professional culture prized by our students and alumni.
