Urban Murals: Public Art as a Social Tool

Thursday, November 19, 2015 at 7:30pm

King Building, 306
10 North Professor Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

Cesar Viveros, is an artist and muralist who resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His most recent mural was dedicated to Pope Francis in honor of  his visit to Philadelphia in September 2015. In his lecture, Viveros will speak about the process and history of mural-making. He will also talk about participation in a program to create collective mural-making that proved to be a powerful tool for generating dialogue, building relationships, empowering communities, and sparking economic revitalization. These kind of programs have made it possible for thousands to experience and witness the power of art to connect young people to their communities and to future opportunities, to break the cycle of crime and violence, and to bring about healing in individuals and communities.

Before Viveros' talk, a committee of faculty and staff will launch a campuswide Mural Design Contest, titled “Sharing and Learning in Community.” A student, or group of students, will be chosen to complete a mural project on campus, which will be permanently displayed in El Rincón Latino, located in Stevenson Dining Hall. The winners will be announced in mid-February 2016 and the finished mural (16' x 6.5') will be formally unveiled in September 2016.
