At the turn of the 20th century, American museums were populated with plaster casts—objects that museums considered equally instructive for connoisseurs and the public. Hannah Wirta Kinney, assistant curator of academic programs, explores how the material qualities of plaster casts became entwined with debates concerning the educational role of museums in the period.
