The Ramayana Epic in Indian Art and Performance with Paula Richman: Lecture

This Mead Swing, and Haskell Lectureship event is presented by Paula Richman, William H. Danforth Professor Emerita, Oberlin College Department Religion.

10:30 AM – Gallery Talk: From Wall Painters to Fine Artists in North India: Mithila Paintings StudiOC, Gateway Center, 10 E. College St.

Richman will introduce and provide social and political context for a group of paintings by North Indian women that focus on scenes from the Ramayana. Oberlin Special Collections houses the third largest collection of these paintings in North America.

The exhibit will be curated by current students of South Asian Religions under the supervision of Professor Emilia Bachrach.

4:30 PM - Lecture:  Performing the Ramayana Narrative Across India Hallock Auditorium, A.J. Lewis Center for Environmental Studies

Richman has taught courses and published monographs and edited volumes on the Ramayana throughout her 30-year career at Oberlin College. She has recently finished a monograph titled A Narrative and a Region: Rama and Sita in Tamil Country and Beyond (New Delhi: Permanent Black [2020]) and an edited volume with R. Bharucha titled Performing the Ramayana: Enactments, Interpretations, and Argument.
