Colloquium guest lecturer Richard Taruskin, professor emeritus of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the most known and most read musicologists of our day. He is an expert on Russian music, musical analysis, modernism, and 15th-century music.
Besides his seminal works Text and Act (1995), Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions: A Biography of the Works through Mavra (1996), and On Russian Music (2008), Taruskin has long been engaged in in the pedagogy of musicology. He has done this by teaching many doctoral students at Columbia University and Berkeley, as well as through his coauthorship of Music History in the Western World: A History in Documents with Piero Weiss (second edition, 2007) and his magisterial six-volume Oxford History of Western Music (2005).
Taruskin is also one of the most familiar musicologists beyond the academy, due to his many articles written for the New York Times. Some of these have been collected in The Danger of Music, and Other Anti-Utopian Essays (2008).
Taruskin earned a BA, MA, and PhD from Columbia University. In 2013, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music from Oberlin College.
About the Colloquium
The Richard Murphy Musicology Colloquium was begun in 1992 by Professor Claudia Macdonald to foster an exchange of ideas on music between colleagues in both conservatory and college. The series was expanded in 1997 to include outside speakers as well, and named in honor of Richard Murphy, who taught music history at Oberlin from 1946 to 1978, and was much revered and beloved by his students. He died in 1993.
