Rosa Terlazzo of the University of Rochester will present the 2nd Rhoden lecture this year titled ‘Hope for our Children.’

Abstract: Talking to our children about injustice is very plausibly a moral imperative—but many parents resist this imperative because they rightly recognize that talking to their children about injustice exposes them to painful and difficult realities in the world. In this paper, I take the worries of these parents seriously, but rather than arguing that this absolves them from talking to their children about injustice, I argue that it requires doing so in a particular way: that is, in a way that gives them hope. I distinguish between three kinds of hope that parents should provide for their children when talking about injustice: hope for the world, hope for themselves as those harmed by injustice, and hope for themselves as those who benefit from injustice.

Rosa Terlazzo is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. Between 2013 and 2019 Terlazzo was an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at Kansas State University. During 2016–2017, she was a Faculty Fellow at the Murphy Center at Tulane University, and during Fall 2017, she was a Center for Ethics and Education grant recipient.
