In this talk, Paa Joe, one of Ghana's most celebrated "fantasy coffin" artists, describes the history, use, production, and reception of this distinctive art form. In southern Ghana, Gas have a long established history of utilizing fantastical and flamboyant coffins during lavish funeral ceremonies. Designed to embody important symbols in a deceased person's life, today the coffins are also exhibited in museums worldwide.
Paa Joe's talk will detail this history, discussing Ga funeral ceremonies and religious beliefs; his own creative process; and his over four decades of experience in creating coffins for local use and international exhibition.
