DESCRIPTION:Please join the art department for the opening reception for Of
Aggression and Domination\, an exhibition of work from Omid Shekari\, visi
ting assistant professor of drawing.\n\nThis exhibition shines a light upon
the liberal and conservative media\, and strives to reflect how it dominat
es the national conversation on the US military actions overseas. It seeks
to show how distorted this conversation has become\, and shadows the real b
rutality and its impact on the daily destruction of the lives of others. Su
ch activity is cloaked in excuses of National Protection. A normative cultu
re of military\, guns and xenophobia which has been built under the new lib
eral-capitalist agenda\, only results in exacerbating aggression\, tension
and war\, further perpetuating a climate of hostility\, fear and suffering.
The state\, as a military institution\, has the ultimate power to use fear
in order to justify Military action\, policing and violence for the sake o
f control and domination.\n\nThis project looks at power in the context of
National Protectionism\, and probes the levels of domination and violence t
hat it causes\, as well as possibilities to resist such a phenomenon that w
e collectively face with increasing levels of the global militarist politic
s.\n \nOmid Shekari is an Iranian artist based in Oberlin. His research-bas
ed work captures stories which speak universally about how force and violen
ce still determine the rhythms and laws of power within the human experienc
 e. \n\nRecent exhibitions include Drawing Center\, NYC\; Marginal Utility G
 allery\, Philadelphia\; NADA\, NYC\; Greenfield Community College\, OH\; Fl
eisher Art Memorial\, Philadelphia\; Ohio State University\, OH\; PAFA Muse
um\, Woodmere Art Museum\, Gallery Joe\, Philadelphia\; and Pelham Art Cent
er\, NY.\n\nShekari is currently a visiting assistant professor at Oberlin\
, and a part of the Open Sessions program at Drawing Center.
