Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 8:00pm

Hall Auditorium
67 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

Come and explore new ways to experience sensual imagery, co-dependence, historical commentary, and the creation of a unique community. The concert features a guest performance by Neos Dance Theatre under the artistic direction of Bobby Wesner. Wesner also premiers a new work performed by the Oberlin Dance Company. Guest artist Amy Miller premiers a new collaborative work, and Samantha Bergman and Winona Brown restage their sophisticated duet. From intimate encounters to immersive group pieces, this diverse concert promises to expand and inspire.

***********

Coalesce, choreographed by guest artist Amy Miller (formally of GroundWorks Dance Theatre) in collaboration with the performers. The work was created in a two-week intensive with Oberlin students this past January. Prioritizing the importance of awareness of both within and without, the piece explores moments of vibrant solitude and intimate dialogue, as well as the interplay of the group as a whole. Coalesce is accompanied by original music by Peter Swendsen.

Retorno, choreographed and performed by Samantha Bergman ’13 and Winona Brown ’13 speaks to the support and give and take in human relationships. The piece reveals the feelings of incompleteness felt when inhabiting separate realms and the wholeness that can be created when codependence and equality are shared. Through weight sharing and physical and mental proximity, two souls dance as one in this poignant duet.

In a medieval world of jesters and ladies in waiting, Royal Feast, choreographed by guest artist Bobby Wesner, was initially inspired by the music of George Frideric Handel and centers on the medieval themes of hierarchy. Referencing the symbolic and historical uses of food, Wesner defines various characters in the royal court to comment on the ultimate failure of feudalism.

Originally choreographed for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Lickety-Split is a witty piece choreographed by Alejandro Cerrudo and performed by members of Neos Dance Theatre. The sextet combines contemporary dance, traditional partnering, and theatrical movement in this hilarious look on love, lust, and passion in a series of duets.
