Dr. Lee Allen is assistant professor of trombone at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Known for his musicianship and versatility, he has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Diego Symphony, and was acting principal trombone of the Las Vegas Philharmonic from 2008-2013.

Multitalented in diverse musical genres, Allen recently performed on-screen with Adele at the 2013 Academy Awards. In 2008, he toured with award-winning smooth jazz artist Brian Culbertson. Allen has worked on numerous recording projects in Los Angeles at studios such as Warner Bros. and Capitol Records. Most recently, he recorded on a project at The Bridge Recording in L.A. with Jay Friedman, principal trombonist of the Chicago Symphony. This collaboration among principal trombonists of major orchestras and top L.A. recording artists featured Friedman’s trombone choir arrangements. The CD is scheduled to be released in 2016.

Allen is a founding member of the critically acclaimed MOMUS Trombone Quartet. Online Trombone Journal lauded their album, The Lexingport Project, as “impressive” and a “splendid debut.” Their unique repertoire choice garnered even more praise: “Mixing new pieces with classical, straight styling with contemporary, the Momus Quartet pushes the bounds in a convincing manner.” The CD remains as one of the top selling trombone quartet albums available. Allen recently created the new Oberlin Summer Trombone Workshop with fellow MOMUS members.

A dedicated teacher, Allen led the Oberlin Brass Quintet (OBQ) China Tour in Summer 2015. In 30 days, OBQ played 19 concerts in world-class venues in 17 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai. He has also presented master classes throughout the United States. Before coming to Oberlin, Allen was the trombone instructor at the Colburn School for the Performing Arts. In Summer 2016, he will serve as trombone faculty at the InterHarmony International Music Festival in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany.

Allen received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in trombone performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Kentucky. His primary mentors have included Terry Cravens, Dale Warren, Bill Watrous, and Per Brevig.

Allen is grateful to be able to share his enthusiasm for music with Oberlin students. When he’s not teaching or making music, he enjoys trying new restaurants, hiking, and golfing with his wonderful fiancée, Alison Balbag.
