Donald S. Lopez Jr., professor of Buddhist and Tibetan studies at the University of Michigan, will deliver a Mead Swing Lecture.
How are we to understand the missionary, the person who goes to a foreign land to convert its people? If we feel that we know the truth, are we obligated to share it?
These are some of the questions raised when we consider the many Roman Catholic missionaries to Buddhist lands in centuries past. The most famous missionary to Tibet was the Jesuit priest Ippolito Desideri, who believed that he could convert Tibetan Buddhists to Christianity by refuting the doctrine of rebirth.
In this lecture, Lopez will explore Desideri's arguments and ask whether religious belief has anything to do with reason.
