Lisa Florman, professor and chair of the Department of Art History at Ohio State University, will present her talk, Looking into Picasso's Glass of Absinthe.
This talk will explore the complex facture of Picasso's cubist still-life paintings circa 1911-1912, focusing on the Allen Memorial Art Museum's Glass of Absinthe.
Of particular note is the contrast the painting itself sets up between its highly schematic rendering of the depicted objects (including the eponymous glass) and the intricate complexity of the surrounding areas, with their surprisingly varied brushwork and dense layering of pigments.
The painting seems to be remarking a difference between two distinct sorts of things—mass-produced objects and handmade works of art—and, perhaps just as importantly, between the kinds of worlds to which each of them belong.
