Live Music at J-House

Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 7:00pm

Hebrew Heritage House (Johnson House)
216 South Professor Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

Batya Levine, Aly Halpert, and Arielle Korman are on tour! Join three queer Jewish leaders and musicians whose songs fuel community, movement, and liberation. Offering original music by all three musicians and featuring Aly and Batya’s debut albums Loosen and Karov, this participatory concert is a chance to be together in healing, spirit, and celebration of our collective resilience. Come sing along to three-part harmonies, ground yourself in nigunim (wordless melodies), and dream about what’s possible while listening to Arielle’s soaring violin playing. However you arrive, Batya, Aly, and Arielle invite you into community, closeness, and song.

If the weather is nice, Batya, Aly, and Arielle will perform on the front porch of J House and folks can spread out on the lawn to picnic and enjoy the show. In case of rain, we'll move inside J House. There will be a short Q&A with the musicians afterwards.

This program is jointly sponsored by the Jewish Studies program, Hillel, and the Oberlin Conservatory.

About the musicians:

Aly Halpert (she/her) writes songs for building community, working for collective liberation, and visioning different worlds. She is a queer white Ashkenazi Jewish young adult musician, activist, and organizer raised in Ann Arbor, MI and currently living on Lenni-Lenape land (Philadelphia, PA). A singer, pianist, drummer, and guitar player, Aly leads music and prayer for Jewish community, including Eden Village Camp, Let My People Sing, Kol Tzedek Synagogue, and Linke Fligl. Her songs have been sung in national gatherings, song circles, and quiet moments of personal prayer, and have moved people all over the world. Her first album, Nipple Confusion, has made fans of young people and adults alike. Her first full-band album Loosen will be released in April 2022. Learn more at www.alyhalpert.com

Arielle Korman is a Jewish musician, davener (prayer leader), entrepreneur and educator. She often plays music and leads at Romemu, a congregation in New York City. Arielle co-founded and served as the founding executive director for Ammud: the Jews of Color Torah Academy. She grew up playing music with her family at congregation B’nai Jeshurun and has always felt the most spiritually lifted when immersed in song! Check out some of Arielle's music on SoundCloud.

Batya Levine (they/she) uses song as a tool for cultivating healing and resilience in their work as a communal song leader, musician, shaliach tzibur (Jewish prayer leader) and cultural organizer. They believe in the liberatory power of song to untie what is bound within us, and sustain us as we build a more just and beautiful world. Batya is a founding core team member of Let My People Sing! and is a Cultural Organizer with Linke Fligl. She offers song, ritual, and workshops in a variety of communities, and composes original music made of Ashkenazi yearning, queer heart-medicine, and emunah (faith/trust). Batya is also a lover of the ocean, queer dance parties, and puns. Batya released their first album, Karov in 2020. Learn more at www.batyalevine.com
