The Department of German Language and Literatures invites you to attend a public lecture Klezmer Music in Germany, delivered by Gabriel Cooper, Assistant Professor of German at Oberlin College. This event is free, open to the public, and in English.
What is klezmer music, and what is its relation to Germany, then and now? Drawing on his experiences with this Jewish folk music as a player and listener, Cooper will speak about its German roots, controversies associated with the German klezmer revival, and klezmer’s place in the Berlin music scene today. Demonstrations of klezmer repertoire and characteristic elements of the style will be featured in the lecture.
Gabriel Cooper ’04 teaches German language, literature and culture at Oberlin College, and his research focuses on German Jewish literature and thought. During a Winter Term in the early 2000s, he founded the band Spontaneous Oy! with several Conservatory students. After Oberlin, he was a longtime member of The University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble (TUVKE). He contributed to the group’s 2021 recording, New Yiddish Music, featuring Sveta Kundish and Patrick Farrell.
