Directed and Adapted by Phil Wong
Embark on an epic journey into a world of demons, immortals, and one mischievous monkey. Phil Wong '13 directs Mary Zimmerman's modern adaptation of a centuries old story from Chinese folklore.
Journey to the West follows Tripitaka, a monk entrusted with the holy mission of travelling to India to retrieve the scrolls of the Great Vehicle, the law of Buddha. His pilgrimage brings him to the crossroads of adventure and peril as he encounters the three supernatural guardians tasked with protecting him along the way: Zhu Bajie the bombastic pig demon, Sha Monk the saturnine river ogre, and Sun Wukong the impish staff-wielding Monkey King.
Wong’s diverse and talented cast of actors, musicians, acrobats, dancers and martial artists collaborated in the staging and designing of this story, making it a true ensemble piece. An homage to the ramshackle street performances of Chinese tradition that made the story famous, the show will be performed outdoors in South Bowl.
Come see Journey to the West, a rollicking ancient tale of magic, mystery, and redemption.
