Stanford University in Menlo Park, California, has reserved four spots for Ohio Five students to participate as interns in the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) Structural Molecular Biology (SMB) program.

This internship program will match undergraduate students from the Ohio Five who are interested in exploring structural molecular biology research with a research opportunity at SSRL in the SMB area. Over the 8-9 week internship, students will work in the laboratory conducting experiments, designing and using software, and/or measuring and analyzing data associated with research projects directed by SSRL SMB faculty and staff. 

Recent student projects have included structural studies on antibiotic resistance enzyme, crystal growth, sample preparation and equipment design for structural biology research, and software/hardware developments for automated crystal screening. This is a fully funded program and participants will receive a weekly stipend, paid housing, and travel to and from Menlo Park.

Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio has secured 30 Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) offered exclusively to students of the Five Colleges of Ohio, thanks to an expanded collaboration between the Ohio State University College and the Ohio Five.  In addition to SURE internships originally offered in STEM fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, statistics, physics, mathematics, and epidemiology in summer 2019, the program will now also include research opportunities in biology and public health.  This is a fully funded 10-week program including paid wages and campus housing at Ohio State from May to July.
