Want to win cash prizes for a five-minute speech? Try out for the Charles Finney Oratorical Competition. Lorenzo's pizza will be served.

Eligibility: Any current Oberlin student is eligible. There will be two divisions: 1) first years; 2) upper classes

Prizes:  Three given for each division. 1st $300; 2nd $200; 3rd $150; Winning speech video put online.

Topics: each contestant must choose ONE of the following:

  • Is the printed book becoming obsolete?
  • Should NASA receive more financial support from the government? Why or why not?
  • Was President Obama right to announce a timetable for withdrawing our troops from Afghanistan? Do you agree with his timetable?
  • Who is the most innovative artist currently working in popular or classical music?
  • Should anonymous Internet postings be banned by law?

Judging: Try-outs will be judged by a three-judge panel consisting of one forensics team member, and two faculty members. Finals will be judged by TBA judges. The Master of Ceremonies will serve as moderator. Judges will offer brief commentary on the speeches.  
Competition: Six finalists will be chosen from each division. The final competition takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. the same day—Saturday, April 6—in West Lecture Hall.
