The Harvey Gittler Memorial Civil Liberties Lecture presents guest speaker Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union. This speech will examine the vicious cycle in which the systematic restriction of civil liberties-often for political gain-contributes to the perpetuation of poverty, while poverty limits access to the political and judicial remedies for these injustices. It is increasingly clear-in the aftermath of the Great Recession and the incomplete victory of the civil rights movement-that the struggle for the Constitutional liberties is inseparable from the fight for economic justice.
