Violinist Sunho Kim ’03 joined the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra in 2008. After serving as Assistant Concertmaster for four years she became Associate Concertmaster in 2012. From 2011 to 2012, the inaugural season of the Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, she performed as concertmaster to great critical acclaim under the direction of Michael Stern, Christoph von Dohnányi, Bernard Labadie, Carlos Miguel Prieto and Jeffrey Kahane. Before moving to Kansas City, Ms. Kim was a fellow at the New World Symphony (NWS) in Miami from 2005-08, and served regularly as a concertmaster under Michael Tilson Thomas. She has performed as a soloist with the Kansas City Symphony, Estonian National Symphony, Danish Free Mason Orchestra, Korean Symphony, Seoul Youth Chamber, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed solo recitals in Italy, Germany, Denmark, Great Britain, Czech Republic, South-Korea and the United States. An active chamber musician, Ms. Kim has performed at the Colorado Music Festival, the Yellow Barn Chamber Music Festival, and in 2007 she performed at the Shanghai International Music Festival with the chamber music ensemble of NWS. She is also a founding member of the Tappan String Quartet, and has performed with them at the Smithsonian American History Museum. Ms. Kim has won numerous awards including first prize and best interpretation at the International Heino Eller Violin Competition in Tallinn, Estonia, first prizes at the Royal Danish Academy of Music Competition in Copenhagen, the Bales Violin Competition in Boston, Sun-Hwa Music Competition, and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist Audition. She has attended numerous summer festivals and masterclasses, and studied with world renowned violinists such as Masuko Ushioda, Milan Vitek, Mi-Kyung Lee, Sylvia Rosenberg, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Franco Gulli and Ana Chumachenko. Ms. Kim is currently teaching at the University of Kansas as a Violin Lecturer, and in her free time she enjoys cooking with her friends.
