A guest lecture by Frank Chiou, professor at Ohio Wesleyan University.

The "Concept" as a Basis for Score Interpretation—

Interpreting a score can be a challenge, not only for professionals but especially for the students we teach. Since the meaning of score markings is often different between style periods and even different composers, pianists can struggle with deciding what markings in the score mean and how they should be executed—dynamics, slurs, articulation and pedal markings, etc. In this presentation, I discuss what I simply call a "concept", which provides a framework within which all elements of the score can be interpreted.
