A talk by Jenny Xin Luan ’18 (Grants and Fellowships Coordinator, Oberlin Shansi, Shansi Hiroshima Fellow ’18–’20). This talk explores how a small idea branches out into a network and, with help from many communities and volunteers, bears different fruits. Founded in 2011, Green Legacy Hiroshima builds partnerships through sending atomic bomb survivor tree seeds with a mission to promote peace and nuclear disarmament as well as to change mindsets on nature and the environment. 119 partners in 36 countries later along with connections from the UNITAR* Hiroshima Office and grassroot NGO ANT-Hiroshima, a sister initiative was born, the Afghan Fellowship Legacy Project Botanical Gardens Network. GLH’s mission extended to Afghanistan to address the importance of conserving the environment and creating a common platform for education, research, development, and other fields in the country. This talk is based on my experiences as a member of GLH's Secretariat Team in Hiroshima as a Shansi Fellow, and my involvement in AFLP. As a young team member, I am always amazed by the diverse connections born in this initiative but also recognize the logistic and operational challenges ahead to fulfill this enormous task.
