First Thursday Purchase Party

Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 5:00pm to 8:00pm

Allen Memorial Art Museum
87 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

The community is invited to join the Allen Memorial Art Museum in closing out its centennial year with a purchase party event . The Allen’s first purchase parties were held in the 1940s, when it was among the first American museums to ask the public to vote on works of art for acquisition. Many wonderful works of art have been added to the Allen’s collection by popular vote.

Everyone is invited to the party, but only museum members are eligible to cast votes. Memberships will be available at the door, or you can join online.

Guests may view the seven works of art being considered for purchase, and around 5:45 p.m. museum curators will make pitches as to why they believe the works would be valuable additions to the permanent collection.

Andaleeb Badiee Banta, curator of European and American art, has proposed the purchase of a hand-colored, 15th century woodcut titled The Castration of Saturn.

Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art Kevin R. E. Greenwood will pitch four possible works for acquisition: a 19th century color woodblock triptych by Yoshu Chikanobu, which depicts Japan’s imperial family in Western dress; a 20th century engraving by Japanese artist Takuji Kubo titled Brazilian Dragonfly; and contemporary ceramic pieces by two Japanese artists.

Ellen Johnson ’33 Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Andrea Gyorody has proposed works by two Los Angeles artists that she hopes will be purchased for the Allen’s collection: a portfolio of seven photogravure prints by Catherine Opie, and a relief print on handmade paper by Analia Saban, who has earned a reputation for playing with materials in ways that seem impossible.

In addition to the works for purchase, visitors can enjoy an evening in the museum galleries and a reception.
