Constitution Day: Pressures on the First Amendment in Higher Education

Join us as we recognize Constitution Day with a conversation between Ohio Supreme Court Justice Pat DeWine and Oberlin’s Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary Donica Varner.

The event will open with a brief keynote address from Justice DeWine, followed by an on-stage conversation with Varner on the topic, “Pressures on the First Amendment in Higher Education.’’ The event will conclude with audience Q&A, where students and audience memebers are welcomed to ask questions.

About Dewine
Justice Pat DeWine began his service on the Supreme Court of Ohio on January 2, 2017. An excellent writer, Justice DeWine is known for the quality and thoroughness of his legal opinions. His opinions reflect his strong belief in judicial restraint and his respect for the constitutional roles of the other coequal branches of government.

About Varner
Donica Varner is an experienced litigation attorney and higher education law practitioner with over 23 years of professional experience representing and advising public and private employers. Prior to joining Oberlin, she was associate general counsel and practice group leader for the faculty, staff and student legal practice group at the University of Michigan.
