Concert: Michael Pisaro's “Concentric Rings in Magnetic Levitation”

Modern Music Guild presents, as part of a weekend residency, a performance of Michael Pisaro's “Concentric Rings in Magnetic Levitation," featuring four renowned new music musicians and composers: Jason Brogan, Joe Panzner, Sam Sfirri, and Greg Stuart. The concert will take place in Central 25, Sunday, March 9, at 8 PM.


The quartet will additionally perform two duo sets on Saturday, March 8 in Fairchild Chapel at 8 PM and give a workshop on March 9 in Bibbins 237 at 4 PM.


Concentric Rings in Magnetic Levitation (2010-2011), inspired by recent hypotheses regarding the electromagnetic character of Saturn's Rings, features an 88-note piano "melody." The “melody” includes a series of 13 concentric "rings" of sine tones, radio static, percussion and other elements which cycle around this central source.


Michael Pisaro was born in Buffalo in 1961. He is a composer and guitarist, a member of the Wandelweiser Composers Ensemble, founder and director of the Experimental Music Workshop and the Dog Star Orchestra, and curator of the record label, Gravity Wave. He is Roy E. Disney Family Chair in Music Composition of Music Composition at the California Institute of the Arts near Los Angeles.


Jason Brogan is a composer, performer, and theorist currently living in Middletown, CT.

Joe Panzner is a computer musician based in Columbus, OH.

Sam Sfirri is a musician and composer living in Montreal.
Greg Stuart is a percussionist based in Columbia, SC.
