Cinema Artists' Cinema 16mm Film Series: Expanded Cinema

Monday, September 24, 2018 at 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Clarence Ward ’37 Art Building, 103
87 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

This program of expanded cinema features three 16mm double-projection films and an eye-boggling 3D short film by artists Andy Warhol, Paul Sharits, Christopher Harris, and Jodie Mack.

Rarely screened (and difficult to see and show in their proper dual-projection format) these works explode conceptions of what cinema is and what film art can do.

Interface shows some of the psychedelic origins of expanded cinema (hinted at in the previous program by Tony Conrad's The Flicker); Outer and Inner Space features Edie Sedgwick casually confronting her multiple selves, in both voice and image; Descending Figures is an improvised work, shot and edited in camera at a Florida theme park Passion play; Let Your Light Shine is an absolutely unbelievable spectacle made for prismatic glasses. Prepare to be blown away!

Featured films include:

Paul Sharits, Shutter Interface, 1975, 25 minutes
Christopher Harris, 28.IV.81 (Descending Figures), 2011, 3 minutes
Andy Warhol, Outer and Inner Space, 1963, 33 minutes
Jodie Mack, Let Your Light Shine, 2013, 3 minutes
