Former Surgeon General of the United States, Regina Benjamin, MD, MBA, is the NOLA.com/Times Picayune Endowed Chair in Public Health Sciences at Xavier University of Louisiana. Throughout her career, Dr. Benjamin has been recognized for her dedication to preventive care.
She has served as president of the American Medical Association Education and Research Foundation as well as on the board of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation among many other organizations. The MacArthur Foundation, Pope Benedict XVI, the NAACP, and others have recognized her as a leader in health care. Dr. Benjamin has special interest in rural health care, health disparities among socioeconomic groups, and mental health.
In 2008, she received a MacArthur Foundation fellowship or “genius award” for her compassionate and effective medical care as the founder and CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Alabama.
