From the Trenches: Artists Respond to WWI

The Allen Memorial Art Museum presents this one-hour program as part of the Oberlin College’s commemoration of the centenary of the end of World War I. The festival running September 8-9 includes four concerts and two panel discussions in the conservatory. More information about the festival on the Oberlin College and Conservatory News Center.

Acquired by the Allen Memorial Art Museum (AMAM) in 1950, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Self-Portrait as a Soldier (1915) is considered one of the most iconic works of art created during World War I. Join AMAM curator Andrea Gyorody and Oberlin Professor of History Leonard Smith for a one-hour session, beginning with a gallery talk on the painting’s historical, political, and artistic contexts, followed by a private viewing of select AMAM works related to the war.

This event is free and open to the public; no pre-registration is required. Each session is capped at 25 participants. Please leave all bags, outerwear, and umbrellas in the lockers near the restrooms or hang them on the coat hooks nearby before joining the session.

Andrea Gyorody is the AMAM’s Ellen Johnson ’33 Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary. She specializes in 20th-century German art.
Leonard Smith is Frederick B Artz Professor of History. He studies modern Europe, war and society, and French imperialism.
