Fragments of Life: African Art In and Out of Context

Monday, September 30, 2013 at 4:30pm to 6:00pm

Allen Memorial Art Building, Classroom 1 87 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH 44074

Please join us for the first of three talks in the African Art Series, "Fragments, Pathways, and New Geographies."

Constantine Petridis, curator of African art at the Cleveland Museum of Art will present his lecture, "Fragments of Life: African Art In and Out of Context."

"Focusing on the Cleveland Museum of Art's recently acquired 34 Congolese sculptures from the collection of RenE [with accent aigu] and Odette Delenne in Belgium, which will be introduced to local audiences in a special exhibition opening on Sunday, October 27, this lecture will discuss how African works of arts serve as windows into the experience and knowledge of the peoples who invented, produced, and used them. In its exploration of the fragmentary nature of African figures, masks, and household objects as they are preserved and presented in Western collections, in both material and spiritual terms, it will also shed light on the different ways in which they have been perceived and understood by audiences across space and through time."
