Later the Same Evening
Mark Campbell’s libretto is inspired by the work of iconic American artist Edward Hopper and his enigmatic depictions of life in New York City during the early 20th century. The one-act opera is set in a single evening in 1932 Manhattan and brings to life the characters and scenes from five Hopper paintings: Room in New York (1932), Hotel Window (1955), Hotel Room (1931), Two on the Aisle (1927), and Automat (1927). In a series of parallel vignettes, the characters all attend the same Broadway show. Later the Same Evening captures Hopper’s frequent motifs of isolation and loneliness, but as the 11 characters leave the theater, the opera’s parting theme rings clearly: New York is full of the possibility of connection.

Bastianello
Bastianello wraps itself around an amusing series of encounters derived from several versions of an old Italian folk tale.

It opens and closes with the narrative of Bastianello the younger, a college student who reminisces about the early married days of his father, Luciano.

Luciano is deeply dissatisfied with his marriage and sets out to discover the meaning of life. He eventually encounters three sets of idiots. His practical advice eventually sets their unbelievable cluelessness right. Except for the final idiot who proves to be something more—someone who has actually learned the meaning of life through his tragic mistake.

Run Time: 40 minutes

Prof. Payne

It is somewhat of a commonplace that the musical works of Johann Sebastian Bach often demonstrate an obsession with numerical symbolism. Although this assertion may sometimes be taken to extremes, there are ample cases, both in his vocal and instrumental works, where such numerical correspondences are undeniable. This talk addresses the various ways that numbers can play out in one of the composer’s best-known works, the Brandenburg Concerto no. 3. Here Bach uses numbers not only as a scaffolding to form and shape the various movements of this work, but – in a manner also frequently encountered in his oeuvre – finds a way to insert himself in the composition, essentially “signing” the work as his own. The results show two different sides to Bach: the composer at his most playful, as well as his most serious.

To fulfill its mission, OCVJC provides no cost legal representation to enforce crime victims’ rights and provide victims’ rights training to criminal justice system officials, allied professionals, drop-in trauma centers, and youth of all ages in school and after school programs in all of Ohio’s 88 counties. OCVJC offers advocacy and legal internships for students eager to support victim-survivors as they navigate the criminal justice system.

TAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot), meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek, is the trio of
Ahmoudou Madassane, Mikey Coltun, and Souleymane Ibrahim, also known as the rhythm
section of Mdou Moctar. TAKAAT is sonic chaos, improvisation, freedom of exploration, and the
punk styles of bands such as Fugazi and Unwound, all mixed together with the guitar music
from the Sahel.

Mr. Gandhi is a Master of the Bansuri (North Indian wood flute) in the Hindustani Classical Music tradition. He is also renowned for exploring points of intersection between this highly traditional music and other styles of global music - including American Jazz. Mr. Gandhi earned a double degree East Asian studies and musical studies - with a focus in improvised music. While here, he studied jazz theory and improvisation with Gary Bartz, Marcus Belgrade, and Wendell Logan.

Jay Gandhi will be performing with the PI Ensembles at The Birenbaum at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 12th.

Bio:

Joshua Colangelo-Bryan is Special Counsel at Human Rights First, where he spearheads impact litigation and advocacy efforts to uphold democratic principles and support defenders of human rights. Beyond representing Guantanamo detainees, he has sued Turkey for assaulting protestors in Washington, D.C., the Trump administration for attempting to deport a college student based on protest activity, and a U.S. pastor who fomented legislation in Uganda criminalizing the LGBTQI community. Josh has conducted human-rights investigations in countries such as Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain. He also served with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.

Jay Gandhi '04, bansuri will perform in collaboration with Oberlin student PI ensembles.

Performance and Improvisation (PI) Ensembles provide an opportunity for students to enrich their existing musical vocabularies and skills through practical exploration of many different world musics and improvisation across a range of genres and styles.

Emphasis is placed on transcription and creating a means of adaptation to the student’s primary (western) instrument. Ensemble instruction is divided into two modules per semester, each focusing on the musical styles of a particular region (Sub-Saharan Africa, South America/Central America/the Caribbean, Northern Africa/the Middle East, Asia).

PI ensembles will participate in intensive residencies and collaborative performances with visiting artists.

Leah Flax Barber is a writer from Chicago. She earned an MFA in poetry at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst and a BA in comparative literature at Oberlin College where she won the Emma Howell Poetry Prize. Her first book of poetry, The Mirror of Simple Souls, was published by Winter Editions in 2025.

Will Schutt is an award-winning poet and literary translator based in Rome. He is the author of Westerly (Yale University Press) and the translator, from Italian, of numerous volumes of prose and poetry. He earned degrees at Oberlin College and Hollins University. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Translation Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship, and the Raiziss/de Palchi Award from the Academy of American Poets.

Based in New York City, GRAMMY award-winning Linda May Han Oh is a bassist/composer who has performed and recorded with artists such as Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Terri Lyne Carrington, Steve Wilson, Geri Allen and Vijay Iyer.

Born in Malaysia and raised in Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia, she has received many awards including a 2022 Deutscher Jazz Preis and was voted the 2018-2021, 2023-2025 Bassist of the Year by the Jazz Journalist’s Association, as well 2022 Bassist of the Year in Jazztimes. Linda also was voted 2019 Bassist of the Year in Hothouse Magazine and was the 2020 recipient APRA award for Best New Jazz Work. In 2023 she received the prestigious Herb Albert Award for music and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music in 2024.

Applicants may receive an award of up to $1,500 for research, an internship, an artistic/creative project, or a service learning venture in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia taking place over Summer 2026. First, second, and third-year students are eligible to apply. We will also consider applications from fourth-year double-degree students.

Prior to becoming a man of letters, Dostoevsky studied at the Main Engineering School in St. Petersburg from 1838 to 1843. After he was arrested, submitted to mock execution by firing squad, and sentenced to penal servitude in Siberia for his involvement in the revolutionary Petrashevsky Circle in 1849, most of the books and journals from the period of his education were confiscated and destroyed by the Third Section of the Russian Secret Police. Although scholars largely discount the legacy of his engineering studies, the literary aesthetics of his works communicate uncanny awareness of mathematical principles and debates. Michael Marsh-Soloway will share details from his recent book, The Mathematical Mind of F. M. Dostoevsky Imaginary Numbers, Non-Euclidean Geometry, and Infinity (Bloomsbury, 2024), investigating how subtexts in the writings of Dostoevsky participate in extended discourses of mathematical thought that evolved throughout Classical Antiquity, the Renaissance, and the Scientific Revolution.

In this talk, he will discuss the 2025 Broadway production of Gypsy, directed by George C. Wolfe and starring Audra McDonald. This production inspired much commentary about the implications of its color-conscious casting and, as with all the divas who have starred in the show, about McDonald’s performance in the arduous role of Rose. This talk will place that production and commentary in the context of his book- in-progress, tentatively titled Gypsy and the American Dream, and reflect on how the show’s newly racialized framing invites comparison with another classic play that, like Gypsy, premiered in 1959: A Raisin in the Sun. Both shows feature a strong single mother determined to realize a dream deferred, with different results. Together, they illuminate meanings of the American dream that became contested during the 1950s and early 1960s, meanings that still resonate today.

About Jeffrey Magee
Magee is an Oberlin alum and professor of music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of two books, The Uncrowned King of Swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz and Irving Berlin’s American Theater, both published by Oxford University Press. His research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and recognized with awards from ASCAP, the Society for American Music, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and the Kurt Weill Foundation. In administrative roles, he has served as director of the school of music (2012-2019) and as associate dean of the college of media (2019-2022), and he is currently interim head of the department of journalism (2025-27). His current book project, tentatively titled Gypsy and the American Dream, is under contract with Oxford University Press.

About the Colloquium Series
The Richard Murphy Musicology Colloquium was begun in 1992 by Professor Claudia Macdonald to foster an exchange of ideas on music between colleagues in both the Conservatory and the College. The series was expanded in 1997 to include outside speakers as well, and named in honor of Richard Murphy, who taught music history at Oberlin from 1946 to 1978, and was much revered and beloved by his students. He died in 1993.

Now in its third decade, the International Contemporary Ensemble is a multidisciplinary collective of musicians, digital media artists, producers, and educators, including numerous Oberlin alumni committed to building and innovating collaborative environments. They will culminate a weeklong residency at Oberlin with a performance of their program, “Composing While Black, Volume II,” joined by Oberlin students and faculty.

The Vindolanda Coins from a Century of Excavations

The Roman fort at Vindolanda near Hadrian’s Wall is best known for its well-preserved organic materials from anaerobic deposits, including most famously leather objects and writing tablets. Inhabited from ca. 85 to the late fourth century CE, the fort and surrounding community are among the best excavated auxiliary sites in Roman Britain. One major body of evidence that has received less public attention are the approximately 4500 coins found in the excavations of the site since the 1930s. These coins provide insights into the economic and social activities of those living at the fort, as well as providing utility for dating the archaeological contexts.

This past year, I created a standardized database of the coins found at the site, which facilitates study of the entire corpus. The coins have recorded findspots from all excavations from 1930 until present, a rarity for a corpus of this size, and have been individually published in annual and periodic site reports. It is now possible to look back on these to understand the numismatic history of the site as a whole and its broader implications for our understanding of Vindolanda and the Roman frontier in Britain.

The two largest groups of coins from the site are bronzes from late third century Gallic Empire and the House of Constantine. Both groups also include significant quantities of local forgeries used to supplement the coin supply and fill the need for lower denominations for day-to-day purchases. The remaining coins date from the mid-Republic to the Theodosian Dynasty. There is a noteworthy dip in finds from the tetrarchy, suggesting a change in occupation patterns during this time. Collection highlights include the only gold coin found at the site to date, an extremely worn Nero aureus found in a fourth century context, and seventeen coin hoards, varying from small purses to two assemblages of over one hundred radiate copies. Vindolanda’s anaerobic layers have also preserved some of the only Roman copper alloy coins that still have their original surface appearance. These are so rare that even replica Roman coins of copper and orichalcum are produced with a dark patina instead of their original orange and golden hues.

The coins from the site are revealing about settlement patterns and economic activities of the inhabitants of Vindolanda. This includes the identification of a late third/fourth century market within the fort in part due to the high concentration of low value coins in the area around the granaries. While not as well-known as other material from the site, the Vindolanda coins provide a valuable dataset that both complements the site’s other materials and stands on its own.
