The word “illegal” has so permeated the media that it’s hard to think that people without papers are truly human. Although this is a contemporary reality, this kind of dehumanization isn’t a new phenomenon. In this talk, Aura Bogado will trace some of the ways that immigrants have become targets for criminalization, and how the condition of “illegality” becomes internalized, and shames some people into acting against their own interests.
Aura Bogado is the news editor for Colorlines, where she writes about racial justice, Native rights, and immigration. She’s contributed to a variety of publications, including Mother Jones, The Nation, and Newsweek Argentina. She’s a graduate of Yale University, and holds a certificate in indigenous peoples’ rights and policy from Columbia University. She was born and raised in South America, is of Guarani descent, and lives in New York.
