How do music, literature, and the arts contribute to resilience and environmental justice movements in communities changed by tsunami, earthquakes, and related traumatic disasters?
This seminar considers music in Indonesia after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, and musical and literary responses in Japan after the 2011 Fukushima tsunami and nuclear meltdown. In addition to group discussion of these themes, Professor Noriko Manabe of Princeton University will talk about "Musicians in the Antinuclear Movement: Motivations, Roles, and Risks.” Facilitators for this seminar will be Oberlin Professors Jennifer Fraser, ethnomusicology and anthropology; Ann Sherif, East Asian studies; and Sylvia Watanabe, creative writing.
